How to Renew an Employment Authorization Document

Many people renew an Employment Authorization Document by filing Form I-765 again and selecting renewal as the reason for applying. A renewal is for a card that is expiring or expired under the same eligibility basis. CivicNest helps you prepare the form. It does not decide whether you qualify to renew.

What an EAD renewal is

An Employment Authorization Document expires. A renewal asks USCIS for a new card so you can keep working under the same eligibility basis, subject to USCIS approval.

Form I-765 Part 1 asks whether you are applying for an initial EAD, renewing one you already have, or replacing a card that was lost, stolen, or damaged. USCIS uses that choice with your eligibility category to apply the correct fee and evidence rules.

Renewal is not the same as a new eligibility basis

A renewal is only for a card that is expiring or expired. If your work authorization now rests on a different legal category, USCIS generally treats that as an initial application even if you had an EAD before.

Do not choose renewal just because you previously held a card. Match Part 1 and the eligibility category to your current situation using the Form I-765 instructions.

Your previous EAD still matters

Renewal filings usually include a copy of the prior EAD. Names, A-Number, and category history on that card should match what you report on the new Form I-765, or you should be ready to explain differences with supporting documents.

Category-specific evidence still applies

Renewing does not remove category evidence. Pending adjustment, OPT, asylum, DACA, TPS, and other categories can still require the supporting documents listed for that code.

Use the supporting-documents and checklist pages together with the official USCIS evidence checklist for your category.

Timing

USCIS publishes category-specific filing windows and automatic-extension rules for some EAD renewals. Those windows are not the same for every category and can change.

CivicNest does not publish a universal “file this many days early” rule here. Check the current Form I-765 instructions and the USCIS employment-authorization page for the timing that applies to your category.

Prepare the renewal form carefully

Confirm the reason for applying, the eligibility category, identity evidence, prior EAD copy, fee or fee exemption, and any category-specific documents before you submit.

CivicNest can walk you through Form I-765 questions and produce the PDF. You review the package and file with USCIS yourself.
